4worldlovers: The Museum of the History of the Romanian Jews was founded in 1978, at the initiative of Moses Rosen (back then, chief rabbi of the Jewish community in Romania), in a building declared a historical monument in 2004. We speak of the former Temple of the Holy Union, built in 1836 as a place of worship for the local tailors’ craft union. The edifice was restored and underwent substantial architectural modifications in 1910, but it finally lost its original function in 1968. Since 1978, it has been sheltering the Romanian Jewish History Museum. We welcome visitors ofering them the opportunity to learn about the history of the Jewish communities in Romania, about its origins, growth, contribution and influence to the Romanian culture, economy and political life.


Located in the Jewish Quarter, on Mămulari Street, which seven decades ago were the most numerous synagogues, the Museum of the Jewish History and Culture in Romania addresses the general public regardless of age or nationality.

Established in 1978 by Chief Rabbi Dr Moses Rosen the museum was the first institution of its kind in Romania, showing for the first time the history of the Jews on these lands, from antiquity to contemporaneity. The museum has a rich collection of documents, photographs and works of art, ceremonial objects and publications reflecting the Jewish life locally and globally for over 2,000 years.

Through the core exhibition we invite our visitors to learn and understand, through a rich visual exploration, what was and still is the Jewish life here and anywhere in the world, what chronological route has our Jewish history and identity had, stressing on the most important moments of Romanian and Jewish life. The exhibition tells in a contemporary language important moments in the cycle of Jewish life, important moments of the Jewish contribution to the construction of modern Romania. Our goal is to build bridges over ignorance, to destroy the barrier of ignorance and to rediscover together the common road of humanity. The core exhibition presents excerpts of what it meant to be a Jew in Romania over the centuries. Where did they come from? How were they organized? As a community, in shtetl, and later on, as an economical and dynamic city? What kind of opportunities did they find? But what kind of restrictions did they meet?

To the left, the exhibition From Shtetl to the City invites you to discover the life of the Jewish families, their home, their work and traditions, then in Heder Alef-Beys ,you will find out how important education in the early years of a Jewish child is, pointing at important moments in the life cycle of a Jewish family. The objects exhibited celebrate family life, both at home, in the community and in the synagogue. The majority of the artefacts are from the old collection of the museum, the rest coming from recent donations.

To the right, the Millennial Travelers section: Our heroes will tell the long history of Jewish existence on Romanian territory, highlighting the contribution of the Ashkenazic and Sephardic families of Jews to the cultural and economic development of their country, to the establishment of the most important Romanian institutions (the National Bank, The Romanian TV Broadcasting Station) up to date.

On the 1st floor, the Pinacoteque of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania invites you to admire the heritage ​​of the visual arts, left by Jewish and Romanian artists that represent the most important artistic movements of the Romanian art specifically the Romanian avant-garde, as well as contemporary art pieces.

The second floor is waiting for you to admire the restoration of Aron Kodeş of the Harlau Synagogue, along with ritual objects and information about the Jewish holidays.
