Kirsten Murray: My hair was as pink as my face after I saw the result.From what I’d read about Contemporan, I was looking forward to getting my hair coloured and cut in a more unique surrounding than your typical salon.I don’t enjoy writing negative reviews, especially of independent businesses, but my experience was disappointing and I don’t feel that my dissatisfaction was fully addressed by the salon.I arrived with a photo reference of the colour and style I was looking for. Easy, I thought, as the picture was of me with my dark blonde hair highlighted, and cut slightly shorter than the length I’d walked in with. 

I’d been having my hair coloured like this for years, and never had any issues at other salons. I’d also been growing my previous highlights out, so any dye would be applied to my natural hair colour.After discussing what I was looking for (lighter blonde, with a cool tone, and a natural look), Alex began the colouring process.It took a really long time for my hair to be dyed and cut – 6 HOURS to be exact!! This is twice as long as it’s ever taken elsewhere. Considering my hair was just below chin-length and very fine, this seems like an unreasonably long time to be in the salon.After spending what felt like an age with my head over the sink, having various washes done, Alex came through to check the colour and remarked to me, “it’s pink”. I thought he was just trying to be funny. But when I was brought back through to be seated for the cut, and the towel was removed, it was, in fact, pink. And it wasn’t long before my face matched the colour of my hair, as I was so taken aback.Alex could see I wasn’t happy. He explained he thought it would suit me and that over time it would fade. As graciously as I could, I explained that this wasn’t what we discussed and I was having a hard time processing what had just been done to my hair without any discussion about it first.I love when a stylist or colourist has new and interesting ideas about my hair but believe it’s very important that they discuss it with me beforehand so that I can agree to any proposed changes that deviate from what I’ve originally asked for.During the cut, I asked why Alex was thinning my hair out in places and feathering out the ends. His intention was to create texture, but after doing this he told me it hadn’t really worked. When you’ve got thin, fine hair a blunt cut helps the hair not to look flyaway or stringy. It definitely looks thinner than it was before.I’m pretty gutted about the service and wish I’d not paid for a cut and colour I was not satisfied with, but I was so hungry after 6 hours in the salon and desperate to leave, so I did pay. It cost £140.Once I’d had time to consider what had happened, I emailed Alex to reiterate that I wasn't satisfied with the service and asked, as a goodwill gesture, if they'd consider a partial refund (I was willing to pay for the cost of the materials). He asked me to come back into the salon the next day to strip the colour out – I couldn’t as I was flying home that morning. After that, I never heard anything from him regarding a refund.Whilst the pink eventually faded to a strawberry blonde, after a couple of months of washing it every day, I still don’t have the colour I wanted and the highlights revealed under the pink are a bit patchy and aren’t well-blended with my natural colour.I don't believe that Contemporan ever had bad intentions or were knowingly unprofessional. I'm also sure many people will be delighted with their hair if they go there.
